New Delhi, July 7th: The union Human Resources Development minister, Mr. Kapil Sibal informed in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that the government would enter into joint ventures with the foreign universities soon. The draft bill enabling this was being sent by the ministry to the cabinet for its approval. Mr. Sibal said that the government would also set up more IITs and IIMs across the country. The centre further stated that the deemed universities have been allowed to remove the tag ‘deemed’ and identify themselves as universities.
The minister for state for HRD, Mrs D. Purandeswari, disclosed that the University Grants Commission has approved the use of the word “university’ by such institutions. This is good news for the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences and the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad and a handful of other entities in the state. The total number of deemed universities in the country are 125. The decision was taken on the basis of a recommendation by a committee comprising the heads of the UGC, the All-India Council of Technical Education and former secretary of Higher education.
