Kakinada, Dec 01st: Beating global economic recession and industrial slowdown, Kakinada Sea Ports Limited (KSPL), one of the deep water sea ports in the country handled nearly 20 percent more cargo at 7.80 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2008-09 as against 6.52 MMT in the 2007-08. The KSPL broke records by reaching its target well in advance stage of its financial year. According to statistical reports of the KSPL here, the total cargo handled at the port was 7.8 mmts including 4.9 mmts (imports) in 2008-09. It was 6.52 mmts of the total cargo including 2.21 mmts of imports in 2007-08.
Similarly, a total of 6.88 mmts of cargo was handled in 2006-07, and 6.75 mmts of cargo handled in 2005-06. During the period between April and November of 2009-10 itself, coal and fertilisers were imported at 1.17 mmts and 1.2 mmts respectively. Iron ore was marked as a huge cargo with 1.46 mmts in the export category in the same period. Speaking on this, the chief executive officer of the KSPL, Mr. Y.S. Prasad said that the KSPL was reaching its target in advance because of its rapid and customer friendly cargo handling activities. The KSPL aims to handle 10 mmts of cargo by the end of 2009-10.
