Hyderabad, April 5th: For the IIT-JEE entrance exam which is scheduled to be organized on April 12th, the number of applicants for the exam has increased to 25,000. Last year 40,000 students have applied for the exam and this year the number has increased to 65,000. At the national level the number of applicants increased from 3.5 lakh last year to 4.5 lakh this year.
The IITs has implemented 9% reservation to other backward caste (OBC) last year and raised the reservation by another 9 percent this year. With this the total reservation for OBCs has reached to 18 percent. With the increase of the number of aspirants every year, the IITs are proportionality increasing the reservation for OBCs. This year nearly 98,000 OBC candidates are likely to appear for the exam across the country.
According to Mr. Bhaba Sarma, JEE chairman at IIT-Guwahati which is conducting the IIT-JEE 2009, the 7 old IITs will provide a reservation of 18 percent to OBCs and the 8 new IITs will provide a reservation of 27 percent for them.
