Hyderabad, Jan 3rd: The three IIITs in Idupulapaya, Nuzividu and Basar which were established by the state government for imparting IT education, will now offer other engineering courses. The government was forced to review its decision with the slowdown in IT sector. It will introduce engineering courses in Electronics and Communication from the next academic year as a precautionary measure.

Having allotted Rs 1,500 crore so far on building infrastructure for IIITs, the officials of RGUKT felt it was not wise to take chances and to rely only on the IT sector. The government has been providing free education to 2,000 students in each IIIT. It was incurring an expenditure of Rs 1 lakh per annum on each student to provide hostel, food, clothes, books and laptop to each student. The IIITs were launched by then Chief Minister Y.S Rajashekar Reddy from the 2007-08 academic year.
