Inspector-General of Police (Visakhapatnam range) Vinay Kumar Singh said that the Management in the Professional colleges and the Police Department are responsible for the continuation of incidents of ragging on the premises of educational institutions. Mr. Vinay Kumar Singh on Tuesday said that, the ragging threat could be restricted completely within one year, provided stringent action was initiated against those who resorted to the act. While addressing a conference on anti-ragging measures organized by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTUK), Mr. Vinay Kumar Singh said, “Soft handling is not suitable to control threats like ragging. We have to be tough with the accused. The students continue to commit ragging, as they are confident that nothing will happen even if they commit the same offence again and again,” he added. Mr. Singh said that the students of professional courses were not supposed to think beyond their academics, as their day's schedule was expected to be very tight with class lessons, practical tests and research work. He also observed that most of the educational institutions are trying to avoid the interference of police even after taking place of incidents of ragging on their campuses. Mr. Singh felt that the police must act tough against the criminals of ragging cases, but should not spare them at any cost. Vice-Chancellor of the JNTU-K, Mr. Allam Appa Rao, who presided over the meeting, observed that ragging was at its worst form in India and there was a need to take steps to control it. DIG (Eluru range) Mr. Mahesh M. Bhagawat, Superintendents of Police Mr. G. Srinivas, Mr. S.J. Janardhan, Registrar of the JNTU-K Mr. V. Ravindra, faculty members Mr. G.V.R. Prasada Raju, Mr. J.V.R.
