Kakinada, Feb 2nd: People of both East and West Godavari districts are hoping high for the clearance of two rail projects in the ensuing rail budget. These two are Kakinada-Pithapuram rail line for a distance of 24 km, and Amalapuram-Narsapuram-Kotipalli rail line for a distance of 70 km. The former was given technical clearance in 1998 and the later in 2001. The two projects were cleared at the instance the former Union minister, Mr. U V Krishnam Raju and GMC Balayogi when the two were representing Kakinada and Amalapuram Lok Sabha Constituencies.

The East Godavari District and Cocanada Passengers Association has been highlighting the need for connecting Kakinada to railway main line since 1960 and represented the matter to railways on several occasions. Things started moving after BJP-led NDA came to power in 1998. Since then the project was kept pending for more than a decade. It picked up momentum after 2004, when Mr. Pallam Raju was elected from Kakinada Lok Sabha Constituency.

Even the former chief minister, late Dr. Y.S Rajashekar Reddy has come forward to bear the costs of the land acquisition for the project. In spite of this the project did not not get the clearance from either Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav or Ms Mamata Benarjee. The Kakinada rural PRP MLA, Mr. Kurasala Kannababu, said on Tuesday that he will strive for the execution of Kakinada Pithapuram line to make it a reality.
