HIV kids get nutritious diet

Kakinada, Jan 2nd: District health authorities are making efforts to conduct regular tests, provide medical care and to supply adequate nutrition to the HIV positive children aged below 12 years at the two anti-retroviral therapy centers located in Rajahmundry and Kakinada in East Godavari. As many as 300 children infected by HIV virus through their parents in the district. Some have lost their parents and are either staying with their grand parents or being supported by some voluntary agencies.

The AP state AIDS Control Society and Clinton Foundation has started to supply nutrition to these children recently and each child is given three kgs of nutritive powder once in a month. The AP Foods Corporation supplies the powder to the ART centers. The authorities say that registration of the children helps them to keep a tab on their health on a regular basis. These children are asked to come to the ART Center once in a month for screening. The children are also given medical support to help them fight opportunist infections. As the children are also more vulnerable to getting infected by tuberculosis, the authorities are also keeping a watch on their health.
