Hyderabad, Oct 12th: History was created by Hyderabad shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Shuti Kurie by becoming the first women’s pair to win a four star badminton tournament. They captured the Bulgarian Grand Prix women’s doubles title on Sunday in Sofia. Jwala also won the mixed doubles title parting with Diju. Diju and Jwala also bagged Bitburger Open in Germany last week.
Shruti and Jwala defeated Indonesian players and won the title. Jwala said that “I am thrilled to win two finals and one being the highest ever an Indian women’s doubles have won. I could not believe that I was in two finals of Grand Prix and I am so glad that I won both the titles. I was nearly nervous but pushed myself towards what I wanted, and I reached my goal”.
Jwala said that Sruthi and she were good friends on and off the court. They both won the national women’s doubles in 2000 and have successfully defeated their title ever since. This victory is all made possible by their coach Asif, who trained them for a decade.
