Heavy Losses due to Cyclone

District Collector, Mr. M. Ravi Chandra listed out the loss that occurred due to the recent continuous downpour because of the cyclonic weather. The cyclone caused a loss of Rs. 82.3 Cr to the Government Sector and Rs. 836.9 Crs to the Private Sector in East Godavari District. The loss in the Agriculture Sector alone was about Rs. 387.24 Crs. As per the primary assessment of the Government Departments, the loss in the Irrigation Department is Rs. 18.12 Crs and to the Roads and Buildings Department Rs. 14.17 Crs. Panchayat Raj Department lost assets worth Rs. 4.69 Crs, whereas the loss of the Education Department is Rs. 58 lakhs. Kakinada Municipal Corporation incurred losses of about Rs. 15.25 Crs. Of the total loss of Rs. 387.24 Crs registered suffered by the Agriculture Sector, Rs. 96.86 Crs was due to damage of standing crop, Rs. 258.87 Crs was due to the crop that was lodged, Rs. 4.32 Crs was due to the crop on bundles and the remaining Rs. 27.19 Crs was due to the loss of commercial crops. The loss in the Horticulture Sector was estimated at Rs. 1.3 Crs. In all, crop was damaged to an extent of 87,962 hectares. As many as 2,115 houses were fully damaged and the value of each house was assessed as Rs. 60,000, while the severely damaged houses are 3,144 and the loss per house is estimated as Rs. 40,000. Another 94,879 houses are flooded and the damage per house is assessed as Rs. 20,000. The total loss in the Housing Segment is Rs. 214.9 Crs. Loss incurred to the Fisheries Department is assessed, as Rs. 23.9 Crs and that of the Handlooms is Rs. 16.3 Crs. Sericulture Department estimated its loss as Rs. 60 lakhs and the Animal Husbandry Department as Rs. 80 lakhs. Loss of the Electricity Department is estimated as Rs. 46 lakhs. Loss of the Industrial material and production, however, is assessed as Rs. 191.4 Crs. Mr. Ravi Chandra has said that there would be some changes in the final assessment, as the present assessment was based on primary information provided by the respective Departments concerned.
