Kakinada, May 18th: The government has issued GO for the introduction of village malls in rural areas. According to the East Godavari district joint collector and collector for civil supplies, Mr. Kona Sasidhar the government has taken the decision to make all essentials available at one place to people in rural areas and also to provide a reasonable income to the dealer.
The village malls will be on par with mini super bazaars and will cater to the different needs of the people. The dealer will sell cosmetics and fertilizers in addition to the items supplied under the PDS. Facilities like STD, Post, LIC, bus reservation, computer online facility, sale of recharge coupons of various mobile companies and related activities will be taken up.
The existing fair price shops will be replaced by village malls and the program is being implemented as a pilot project in six mandals of East Godavari district and will be extended to the remaining mandals in a phased manner after assessing its effective implementation. There are 2,256 fair shops in the district catering to the needs of 14.13 lakh white card holders.
