Fishermen oppose new bill

Kakinada, Feb 19th: Thousands of fishermen owing allegiance to different unions unanimously resolved to strongly oppose the new fishing regulation called the Marine Fishing Regulations and Management Bill. According to the new regulations bill,  traditional fishermen have to confine their fishing activity up to 12 nautical miles and obtain permission for fishing beyond 200 nautical miles. If the fishermen fail to obtain permission they will have to pay a fine of Rs 9 lakh.

The fishermen from Uppada, Konapapapet, Thondangi and Chollangi villages and Kakinada decided to stage a demonstration in front of the Collectorate on February 25 in protest against the Centre's move to introduce the bill usurping the rights of traditional fishermen. Speaking on the occasion former MLA V Venkateswara Rao told mediapersons said that the regulations were aimed at usurping the traditional fishing rights while extending concessions to foreign trawlers to exploit marine wealth.
