First swine flu death registered

Mumbai, Aug 3rd: India on Monday registered its first swine flu death when a 14 year old girl in Pune succumbed to the disease, the government said. The teenager first felt unwell on July 21, complaining of a sore throat, runny rose and headaches. She was back to school on next day after her condition was improved. But later on July 25 she developed a fever and was admitted to a private clinic for treatment. She was put on ventilator in an ICU and was treated with the anti-viral drug Oseltamivir. Her condition deteriorated again with multi system involvement and expired on August 3.

 

The number of swine flu cases has topped 550 national wide. The ministry said 2,479 people have been tested for the flu so far, of whom 558 had tested positive for HINI. Of these, 470 have been discharged. Many of the cases involve people who have returned from abroad or those who have contacted with them. Pune has seen many swine flu cases in recent weeks. About 90 children were affected by what was described as an “influenza-like illness” which was reported in early July and several tested positive for HINI.
