Kakinada, Mar 21st: As a part of water conservation and effective utilization of water resources, the AP Micro Irrigation Project (APMIP) authorities are encouraging the cultivation through micro irrigation process. In addition to this less water use and more area coverage also picked up momentum. To encourage the irrigation under this system the government extended subsidies to the farmers. But the modalities and norms in providing the subsidies is said to be affecting effective implementation of the scheme in the district. A target of 3,000 hectares was fixed by the authorities for 2009-10 year. But they could achieve only 2,100 hectares by the second week of March. Few of the farmers allege that the ceiling on subsidiary to the extent of Rs 50,000 was sufficient to only few acres and the remaining acres should be invested on their own which is becoming an additional burden for them.
