Kakinada, Jan 3rd: A total of 35,081 poor people in East Godavari district were provided free medical treatment including major surgeries under the Rajiv Arogyasri, the brain child of former chief minister late Y.S Rajashekar Reddy. Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, the collector, Mr. Gopala Krishna Dwevedi said that East Godavari was emerging as number one in the state for successful implementation of the scheme. The state government spent about Rs 110 crore on providing treatment to patients under the scheme, which was inaugurated in December 2007.

Nearly 35,000 poor people including 15,901 women were provided medical treatment by four government and 22 private network hospitals in the district. Under the scheme, heart surgeries were conducted on 34 per cent patients, 10 per cent for cancer and eight per cent for accident victims, he added. The district coordinator of the scheme Mr. K. Krishna Kumar and the DMHO, Mr. Vijay Kumar were present.
