Kakinada, Nov 20th: East Godavari district is emerging as state's largest center of trafficking in women, said Mr. Mahesh M. Bhagawat, deputy inspector general of police, Eluru range. Besides poverty, illiteracy and ignorance, factors like globalisation also contribute to the alarming situation, he added. Presiding over a review meeting on the status of crime and the steps taken against the trafficking of women in the district with the SP, Mr. Y.Nagi Reddy and police staff here on Friday, the DIG said some innocent women in the region including East and West Godavari districts and Krishna were being forcefully trapped by brokers.
Later talking about face currency, the DIG said that besides trafficking, the range had become notorious for manufacturing and circulating of fake currency. In India, nearly Rs 1.50 lakh crores of fake currency were being circulated, he added. As police force was less in India, people's support was needed to curb fake currency, he said. Besides, ganja trade from the border areas of Orissa and AP through the East Godavari agency was continuing. He appealed to the people to feel free to dial toll-free number 1091 for registering any complaints relating to attacks on women.
