Kakinada, June 10th: With the rising demand for rubber and rubber products (latex) in Kerala, the cultivation of the same was taken up in a big way in East Godavari district as an income generating activity by the scheduled tribes. With the assistance of Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) and in coordination with the National Rural Development Scheme (NREGS) the program was taken up in an extent of 31,000 acres in the six mandals of Marudumilli, Rampachodavaram, Y. Ramavaram, Addateegala, Gangavaram and Rajavommangi.
The ITDA found the atmosphere and soil in the area which are suitable for rubber cultivation. With the assurance of purchase from the Rubber Board, tribals are assured market for their production. ITDA project officer, Mrs. Yogitha Rani said that rubber plantations would be sown in over one lakh acres in the agency area in the next 12 years as an income generating activity on regular basis to tribals with an investment of Rs 243 crore.
