Kakinada, Feb 8th: Sources reveal that, district is going to reach top in the number of persons holding white cards. The number is likely to cross 14 lakh from the present 12.75 lakh in the next month. Out of the 2.28 lakh pink card holders in the district, 1.38 persons have applied for conversion into white cards. After completion of conversion by the authorities only 90,000 persons are likely to remain with the pink cards. They will be mostly from bank, government and other sector employees.
As far as district is concerned, the clearance of applications by authorities by the end of the month will put an additional burden of Rs 3.5 crore per month in the form of subsidies. At present the district is incurring an expenditure of 16 crore on subsidy to cater to the needs of 12.75 lakh white card holders. This is for the supply of 14,928 metric tones of rice under 2 a Kg scheme, 2,958 metric tones for Antyodaya Anna Yojana and 30 metric tones to Annapurna card holders who get 10 kgs of rice free of cost.
