Kakinada, Dec 3rd: As many as 8000 mentally- challenged people were covered under the 'Niramaya Insurance' Scheme which was launched by the Centre. Addressing a function organized jointly by the Department of the Handicapped Welfare and Indira Kranti Patham to mark the celebration of World day of Differently Abled here on Dec 3, District Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said efforts were being made to extend insurance coverage to all 15,000 mentally-challenged in the district.

He assured all measures would be taken to ensure the entire three per cent of funds earmarked for the welfare of the disabled were spent properly avoiding misuse. In this regard, the Collector said a meeting of all department heads concerned would be convened shortly to discuss about the plan of action for proper utilization of these funds, he added. 

As many as 56,170 disabled are receiving the monthly pension of Rs 500 each in the district. Later, the Collector and the ZP Chairman distributed hearing aid to 20 disabled and tri-cycles to six handicapped people on the occasion.
