Hyderabad, June 28th: The government has recently brought down the rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 7.5 percent to 4 percent. But several hotels and restaurants still charge customers at the old rate of 7.5 percent. The Non-compliance is more in middle segment restaurants and those attached to bars. Several hoteliers are fleecing customers with high rate of taxation.

According to the revised VAT Act, there are only two tax rates. Hotels with three star rating and above which have a turnover of more than Rs 1.5 crore per year are allowed to levy 12.5 percent VAT. All other hotels, restaurants and clubs must levy only 4 percent VAT. Some hotel managements are still collecting 7.5 percent tax ignoring about the tax rate coming down to 4 percent. “Collecting additional amount of tax from customers, and not remitting it to the government is a severe crime”, said official and additional director in Vigilance and Enforcement, Mr. T. Vivek.
