According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, a depression formed over the Bay of Bengal lay centered about 1000 km southeast of Visakhapatnam. People of East Godavari, particularly those who live near the 161 km coastline of the Bay of Bengal are worried over a cyclone threat to the district. The system is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm and move initially in a north-westerly direction towards the state’s coast. Under the influence of this system, coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh including 95 fishing villages in East Godavari are likely to experience extensive rainfall from May 19th. According to sources, cyclone with hit the district in 48 hours and officials were instructed to take necessary precautions measures to protect people from cyclones. Officials have forecast widespread rains over coastal Andhra with strong winds of 45 to 55 km per hour. Speaking on this, Collector Mr.M.Ravi Chandra acknowledged that he received an official cyclone warning from IMD. Following this, he directed 26 cyclone level mandal special officers to take all necessary precautionary measures to protect people.
