Counting begins for GHMC polls

Hyderabad, Nov 26th: Counting of the votes polled in 150 divisions of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) began here this morning. The counting of votes polled on November 23 started at 0800 hrs in 26 centers, spreading over five MP and 24 MLA constituencies with a geographical jurisdiction of 621 sq km. This is first major election faced by the ruling Congress in the State after the demise of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. The electoral fortunes of as many as 1310 candidates are sealed in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), which has planned a fast-unto-death by its President K Chandrasekar Rao on November 29, has kept away from the polls. Confident of putting an impressive performance, Chief Minister K Rosaiah had offered to resign, even if the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) won one seat more than the Congress. However, the challenge was not accepted by TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu. Over 2750 personnel were deployed at the counting centers. Initial trends can be expected at 0930 hrs and final results would emerge by 1400 hrs, the sources said.
