Kakinada, Mar 2nd: Nearly 40% of the black gram crop was damaged due to the effect of virus on them. With this the farmers who raised the same as an alternative crop in the rabi season demanded the government to immediately provide compensation to their crops. Following the directions from the agricultural department, farmers who could not raise the paddy as a second crop in the rabi season, due to non availability of water, selected pulses. With the supply of seeds by the agriculture department on subsidy the crop was raised over nearly 40,000 hectares. The crop was completely damaged due to a virus called Yellow Mosaic.

The former minister from the TDP, Mr. Chikkala Ramachandra Rao said that the crops were damaged due to supply of poor quality seeds by the government and they are sole responsible to pay compensation to the farmers. Joint director of the agricultural department denied the allegations and said that the cause of the disease was due to the changes in the environment.
