CME Program Organized by FOGSI

The Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and Life Cell International Pvt Ltd jointly organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on ‘Cord blood stem cell banking- Its relevance in today's world'. The objective of the CME session was to familiarize the gynecologists with the revolutionary medical concept of umbilical cord blood stem cell banking. FOGSI Kakinada branch K. Rama Devi said the umbilical cord blood and cord tissue will be collected at the time of a delivery and processed and cryo-preserved in stem cell banks for future use to some serious ailments and lifestyle diseases. She said the umbilical cord blood and cord tissue should not be discarded as waste after a baby is born because the cord blood is rich in Hemopoietic stem cells whereas the cord tissue is rich source of Mesenchymal stem cells. The Hemopoietic and Mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to form into different types of cells and tissues which constitute various organs. The cord stem cells are helpful in treating over 75 serious ailments like leukemia, cancer, Thalassemia and lifestyle diseases through stem cell transplant therapies. Life Cell International Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Ajit Kumar gave an impressive talk on the potential of cord blood stem cell research and its utility to the public at large. The CME program was inaugurated by the past president of Kakinada Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Dr. Bharata Lakshmi. FOGSI Kakinada branch Secretary Dr. Nivedita Devi welcomed the gathering.
