Chennai soon to get Krishna water

Hyderabad, Sep 8th: The Andhra Pradesh Government on Tuesday decided to release Krishna waters to Chennai from September 15, besides meeting the drinking water needs of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and other cities, towns and villages along the river Krishna in the State. Addressing a press conference here, Major Irrigation Minister P Lakshmaiah, after attending a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister K Rosaiah, said as per the agreement with neighboring Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh would have to provide five TMC Krishna waters, while Karnataka and Maharashtra would have to provide an equal quantity of water to meet the drinking water needs of Chennai.

The Minister said Krishna waters would be released to Tamil Nadu in two to three spells from next Tuesday. Krishna waters would also be released for filling up tanks in the districts of Nalgonda, Krishna, Guntur and Khammam to meet drinking water needs. He said the State had a combined storage of 310 tmc ft in Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar now and water release for Zone 1 of Nagarjunasagar Right bank canal and zones 1 and 2 of the left bank canal would be decided by the Irrigation Advisory Board soon. The Government had decided to accord priority to hydel generation and also meet the irrigation needs of Krishna delta and Nagarjunasagar command areas, he said.
