Call for awareness drive on reasons of disability

Kakinada, June 14th: East Godavari district joint collector, Mr. Kona Sasidhar stressed the need of creating awareness among the parents to educate them about the necessary precautions to be taken right from the birth of their young ones to avoid the disability. He observed that two to three percent of the children are disabled in the district and suggested that concerted efforts should be made to prevent more such instances of debility.

 

Addressing ICDS community development project officers and supervisors in a training program here on Saturday, Mr. Sasidhar said that nearly six percent of Indians were physically handicapped due to lack of proper awareness among the parents about the precautions to be taken at the time of birth. He asked the pregnant women to take nutritious food and look after their health so that they babies would be immune to different ailments.

 

Assistant Director of Disabled Welfare Department K. Jeevan Babu said a project of identifying the physically disabled was under implementation in rural areas with the help of the National Institute for Mentally Handicapped (NIMH). The CDPOs and supervisors would educate anganwadi workers about identification of children showing signs of disability. Awareness would also be spread among pregnant women. NIMH representative Ramesh, DMHO D. Vijay Kumar, ICDS project director N. Vidyawati participated.
