BCL helps cut use of chemicals

Kakinada, Dec 2nd: The Biological Control Laboratory (BCL) here is reaching its targets well in advance by producing more eco-friendly bio pesticides to reduce the consumption of chemical pesticides in agriculture. Biological control of pests is one of the important means for checking pest problems in almost all agro-ecological situations. Bio-pesticides are living organisms which can intervene in the life cycle of insects and pests in such a way that crop damage is minimised. The department of agriculture established 14 such BCLs in the state.

The Kakinada BCL was established in 1999, and is engaged in the production of bio pesticides which can check pests in paddy, sugarcane, chillies, pulses, groundnut, coconut and cotton. The local BCL gives importance to produce quality products and supplies in time to farmers. Bio-agents are distributed at subsidised prices to farmers under various schemes in the district and also cater to the needs of Srikakulam, Guntur and Nalgonda districts. D. Rama Raju, assistant director of agriculture, BCL, here, said that during 2008-09 the lab first in the state by achieving over and above the targets in respect of all bio-agents.
