Hyderabad, Aug 18th: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked all the banks to install desktop note sorting machines to stop the flow of fake currency notes. A high level RBI group on systems and procedures for currency distribution led by the deputy governor, Ms Usha Thorat, has directed to detect the fake notes as soon as they enter the banking channel. The group also asked to ensure that ATMs and other outlets for currency distribution dispense clean and good notes. With this all new and existing ATMs will be provided with inbuilt note detectors.

It is also recommended withdrawal of notes of old series which are to be replaced with new series with more security features. The group made it clear that no FIR will be filed if any person is in possession of less than five fake notes at the bank counter. The group recommended the use of plastic money and had earlier asked the banks to set up UV lamp detectors. According to the report, businessmen and financiers should also have note sorting machines to check fake currency.
