Kakinada, Aug 7th: The two-day nationwide strike by banks was successful in the district on Friday as hundreds of officers and clerks of public sector banks and some private banks abstained from work to press for wage revision and other demands.

The agitation was led by United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) whose main demands for an upward revision of wages, a second option for pension scheme and compassionate appointments. A series of negotiations UFBU had held with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) failed leading to the strike, which completely paralyzed banking transactions throughout the district.

A large number of bank employees who staged protest demonstrations, vent their anger at IBA for going back on its assurance to increase the wages by 17.5 per cent to which the UFBU agreed. The agitating bankers said there was no reason for the IBA to deny the quantum of wage hike they wanted when other Central Government undertakings had affected massive hikes in the recent past.
