Hyderabad, July 7th: Taking the hike in petrol and diesel prices as advantage the autorickshaw drivers in the city are fleecing the passengers. Depending on the distance they have been charging Rs 10 and more above the minimum stipulated rate. The drivers are refusing to ply if the passengers don’t agree to pay extra charge. Though they did not bother to reduce the fares when the government slashed petroleum and diesel prices in February 2009, the drivers are now demanding extra charges from passengers.

Many people are alleging that it is a big burden on middle class sections in particular in these days of economical slowdown. The transport department has refused to revise auto fares though some auto unions have threatened to go on strike form Wednesday. Unions are demanding Rs 17 as minimum fare and Rs 9 for 1.6 km. The state has fixed Rs 12 as minimum fare and Rs 7 for 1.6 km in June 2008. Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee representative, Mr. Khudratuallah Khan said that the auto prices should not be fixed just on the basis of the fuel prices. He said that the increase in prices of essential commodities should be taken into consideration.
