Under the aegis of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), hundreds of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers staged a 36 hours continuous protest in front of the District Collectorate. Demanding permanent solution to their long-pending problems, the workers commenced their agitation on Monday, continued it until Tuesday evening. The activists sat in front of the main gate of the Collectorate and staged protest by raising slogans against the State Government and demanding payment of monthly salaries instead of the payment of ex gratia payment. They prepared their meals outside the Collectorate and slept in a tent arranged on the roadside on Monday night. The activists took out a ‘funeral' rally with the dummy of the State Government on Tuesday afternoon to register their protest. CITU leaders Mr. D. Seshu Babji, M. Veera Lakshmi and K. Krishnaveni, who addressed the activists, said that there was no response from the Government to the indefinite strike launched by the ASHA workers on 13th of December and the present agitation was to highlight the problems of the workers. They said that it was unfair on the part of the Government to reduce the fixed ex gratia payment for the workers and demanded that salaries must be announced to all workers in place of the present system. The police closed the main gate of the Collectorate and diverted the traffic, as the workers occupied the road in front of the Collector’s office.
