Apartment Collapses at Shantinagar

Syamala Sadhan, a residential apartment complex at Shantinagar in Kakinada which was constructed by ‘Pavani Constructions’ in the year of 2007 has collapsed around 5pm in the Evening here on Friday. About 15 families are residing in the Apartment. According to the preliminary information, the building started shaking with a huge sound and people in the neighboring houses rushed out suspecting it as an earthquake and within few minutes, the residential complex sunk by 10 feet and the first floor came parallel to the ground level even as the cellar along with the watchman’s house sunk into the ground. Most of the residents were away from their homes attending to offices when the mishap took place but even seven girls in the 8-15 age group, who were practicing dance in a flat in the first floor of the complex, remained stuck in the building along with the dance teacher and two other women. District Collector Mr. M Ravichandra, Joint Collector Mr. Ahmed Babu, Superintendent of Police Mr. Trivikram Varma, Municipal Commissioner Mr. V Ravi Kumar, Revenue Divisional Officer Mr. Kishore Kumar and other officials jumped immediately into action along with Fire & 108 Emergency services and started rescue mission in the heavy rain. The officials have cut down power supply and deployed three heavy cranes from ONGC and deep-water port for removing the debris. The authorities had make efforts to rescue the victims and sent the injured to Government General Hospital for treatment. Learning about the incident, Chief Minister Mr. N.Kiran Kumar Reddy and Revenue Minister Mr. N.Raghuveera Reddy directed the district authorities to rush the National Disaster Response Force teams from Vijayawada to Kakinada for rescuing the victims apart from using the services of the Navy. Police asked residents in neighboring houses to vacate, as they feared that five-storeyed complex might collapse at any moment. Later, all People rescued from the collapsed apartment and no one died, announced by Collector after. According to the police, Pavani Constructions owner Mr. A.S.N.Murthy, managed to get permission for constructing a G+3 residential complex, but constructed five floors Apartment and even built a small room for the watchman in the cellar. Mr. Murthy was not available for comment. Meanwhile, the police have launched a search for him.
