AP lags in penalizing officials

Kakinada, Dec 13th: Andhra Pradesh Commissioner for Right to Information Act R Dileep Reddy today said the state is lagging behind in penalizing erring officials under the Right to Information Act. However, according to a study conducted by three independent agencies, the state occupies second position in the country in creating awareness among the people on the provisions of the act, speedy redressel of the grievances received and implementation of section 4(1) B, Mr Reddy told mediapersons.

He said that so far penalty had been imposed under the Act in fourteen cases, including cases involving a University Registrar, an Assistant commissioner of Police and an agricultural officer. In case of an NGO, penalty to the extent of Rs 25,000 was levied, he added. Claiming that efforts on a large-scale are being made to create an awareness among the people on the importance of the Act by the government, NGOs and other agencies for the past four years, Mr Reddy sought the cooperation of the media in playing a key role in popularising the Act.
