Hyderabad, Jan 7 : Under attack from the opposition and also from some Congress leaders, the Andhra Pradesh Government on Thursday intervened to provide relief to the common man and students by bringing down to some extent the hike effected by the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation from midnight last night. After a meeting with Chief Minister K Rosaiah, state Transport Minister S Vijayarama Raju said the bus fare for goods carriage buses in rural areas, which was Rs 3 per five km, was hiked to six and today brought down to Rs 4.
The bus fare in express services which was hiked to 12 paise per km from six paise was brought down to 10 paise. There would be no hike in the charges for providing students bus passes. The APSRTC had targeted to net an additional Rs 562 crore by the hike and the State government had provided relief to the extent of Rs 65 crore. The Government was considering action against APSRTC Managing Director S S P Yadav for ''unilaterally taking the decision, without approval from the State Government to hike fares, he said.
