Kakinada Oct 8th: The expansion works of the domestic terminal airport at Madhurapudi, nearly 65 km from here and 10 km from Rajahmundry in East Godavari district, was resumed after a gap. Revenue officials are busy surveying the required land for modernizing the airport. The airport is important as it is located in the heart of the Krishna-Godavari basin, where the ONGC, Reliance, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, Cairn Energy and several others are operating.

Sources say that there will be a new terminal to expand the present runway from 5,830 feet to 7,500 feet of the World War II airport which was built in 1936. While the construction of the new terminal building is progressing at a cost of Rs 40 crore, the runway expansion proposal is stalled by the problem of land acquisition for the last few months. District revenue officer, Mr M.Mohana Raju said that the AAI had asked them to arrange 966 acre of land to expand the airport which is now being run over only nearly 125 acre. The process would be completed by March 2010, he added.
