Hyderabad, Sep 1st: Only 50 per cent of the seats have been filled in the MCA colleges after many students did not turn up for admission even after being allotted seats in the counseling. This has forced the MCA colleges to urge the government to take over their management quota seats and fill them under convener quota. Of the total 16,000 students who were allotted seats in the counseling, only 12,000 students took admissions. Academics fear that several MCA colleges would head for closure this year due to poor response in the wake of slowdown in the IT sector.
Of the total 29,739 seats in over 550 MCA colleges, only 16,210 seats have been filled up in the first phase. The second phase scheduled began from August 30. About 4,000 students who were allotted seats have not taken admissions. Some students are reportedly planning to switch over to MBA from MCA. Students qualified in the Integrated Common Entrance Test (Icet) have the flexibility to opt for either MBA or MCA as the common entrance test is conducted for both courses.
