Hyderabad, August 3rd: The state government has banned 123 D.Ed colleges from admitting students for this year. As per the norms, the colleges should have a built-up area of 25,000 sft. However these colleges were operating on smaller campuses for the last three years. The decision to ban admission into these colleges has turned controversial with managements of these D.Ed colleges alleging “favoritism” by officials.  They allege that 75 other colleges have been given permission despite insufficient infrastructure.

There are 198 private D.Ed colleges in the state. These institutes offer two year teacher training courses after intermediate. With the decision of the state government to give priority to D.Ed students in the recruitment of secondary grade teachers in DSC exams, more applications have poured in. While over 52,000 students have qualified in the D.Ed entrance exam, the seats have reduced to 3,500 now. These 123 colleges have 6,200 seats.

The first phase of counseling for admission into these colleges is currently underway. However the department of school education has made it clear that it will not include the errant colleges in the second phase though the managements offered to give an undertaking that they will meet the norms at the earliest.
